Meet Explore DEEP, one of the 9 teams who won the first phase of VR4REHAB Covid Rehab and advanced to the next phase the Dev Jams.

From 17 to 21 May 2021 18 teams and 10 individuals from 9 countries, competed in the VR4REHAB hackathon, with one common goal: invent Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) solutions for Long Covid rehabilitation.

Explore DEEP is developing a therapeutic Virtual Reality environment in which victims of Covid can train and improve their breathing, and rebuild a positive association around their own breathing.

The team consists of Niki Smit, Owen Harris, Prof. Isabela Granic, MSC. Joanneke WeerdMeester, Michael Townsend.

The project will provide a stimulating and motivating environment due to Breathing exercises, improving the retention rate of people doing rehabilitation exercises.

Breath

For the first time, people at home will be able to dive into the soothing and calming waters and explore this world. DEEP Quest is a brand new project for the team. For the last year, we have completely reworked every system, art asset, and crafted new environments. This has been done with the strengths and limitations of the Quest in mind for the best possible experience.

Your breath is used to move you through the world of DEEP. As you breathe in you rise upwards and upon your exhale you float back down to the ocean floor. Forward movement follows your gaze and is accentuated as you breathe out.

But it is not just you breathing. When you breathe the world follows and flows with you. The creatures, plants, and patterns mirror your rhythm, reinforcing your link to your own body and being.
