We are pleased to announce that Dr. Joaquim A Jorge will be the keynote speaker of the fourth Plenary Session at VR4REHAB-from ideas to Reality, 24 June 2021 from 16.00 CET.

Biography

Joaquim Jorge is a Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST/UL), the School of Engineering of the University of Lisbon, Portugal, where he teaches User Interfaces and Computer Graphics. He received Ph.D. and MSc degrees in Computer Science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY, in 1995. He is Editor in Chief of the Computers & Graphics Journal and was a member of the ERCIM Editorial Board from 2011 to 2015. He is currently Chair of the ACM/SIGGRAPH Specialized Conferences Committee, and a member of the IEEE Visualization and Graphics Technical Committee as well as the IFIP TC13 (Human-Computer Interaction) and Eurographics. He has organized or helped organize 45+ International Scientific Events. He served as International Program Committee Chair of IEEE VR 2020, Eurographics 2016, the 2013 International Conference on CAD/Computer Graphics (HK/PRC), ACM IUI 2012, among others. He has served on 200+ International Program Committees. Joaquim Jorge’s interests are in Extended Reality, Medical Applications, Calligraphic and Multimodal User Interfaces, Visual Languages, and Pattern Recognition techniques applied to Human-Computer Interaction. A Senior Member of IEEE (2001) and a Distinguished Member of the ACM (2017), he was elected Fellow of the Eurographics Association in 2010 and received the IFIP Silver Core Award in 2014 for services to TC13. He is an ACM Distinguished Speaker since July 2015. He served on the Executive Committee of the ACM Europe Council from 2015 to 2019.

Field of interest

Dr. Jorge´s research areas include Visual Computing, Geometric Modeling, Visualization, and Intelligent Multimodal Interfaces and Pattern Recognition. He has been working on Calligraphic Interfaces for Geometric Modeling and Collaborative Approaches to Design Review. He is (co-)author of two books, edited 14 others, and published over 40 peer-reviewed articles in international journals as well as 150+ conference papers. He is fluent in English, Portuguese, French and Spanish.

Guest Speaker

The keynote speech is entitled “The future of VR”, Dr. Jorge will investigate especially the future aspects that will dominate the medical field in the coming years.

The keynote will be followed by an interview with some of our patients who will report on their experience.
